4 Maples Part 3 07-19-2022
![]() This is a horrible picture of a female Orchard Oriole. I took hundreds of photos of a breeding pair. This is the only one that I could use. They move around quickly and are usually down in the bushy part of the trees, making them hard to see. |
![]() There were several Carolina Wrens hanging around at the big Mesquite Tree. They also hop around really quickly. They liked being on or under this picnic table. |
![]() There were several male Vermillion Flycatchers. I assume there were females, but I never saw any of them. This one was more orange looking than most of them. I think he may be a juvenile that is close to adult. They were really putting on a show. |
![]() There is a huge Mesquite Tree in the front of the house. It was constantly being visited by butterflies and hummingbirds and flycatchers of different kinds. The hummingbirds and butterflies would actually fight each other. |

![]() Gregg's tube tongue (purple), Creeping Sorrel (clover-like), and a Lazy Daisy or Plains Fleabane (not sure which) |
![]() Coral Bells |
![]() This clearing is up near the gate. They have some branches stacked like teepees, but I couldn't figure out what they used the area for. |
![]() a flycatcher of some kind... I would say Phoebe, but there are so many that look the same to me. |
![]() the Dry Frio River |
![]() the Dry Frio River |
![]() Barn Swallow feeding his or her babies... There were two adults tending to each of the nests. I saw this one stick its head inside the baby's mouth, but of course, I missed the shot! |
![]() That baby is all mouth! I saw the swallows dive at the river and get water before returning to the nest. It must be hard to work in the 100+ degrees constantly catching food and getting water. |
![]() Vermilion Flycatcher |
![]() This was a tiny little squirrel that came up from the river and hung out under the picnic table for a few minutes before disappearing. ![]() |
Look at that mouth! |
![]() Here's another hungry baby. This next was right over the front door. Altogether, there were six active nests with babies in them. Most were on the deck. |
