I went out on the patio to drink a hot cup of coffee, which somehow makes me feel cooler on hot days like this when the temperature reaches 100 degrees and above. Many of the birds were perched somewhere with their beaks open looking distressed. I learned that they are doing the avian version of panting, similar to what dogs do to keep cool. These aren't very good photos, but they show examples of the gular fluttering.
