Honey Creek Ranch SNA 11-03-2024

I went on a bird walk at the new Honey Creek Ranch State Natural Area. It was a chance to see this beautiful piece of land before it officially opens in a few years. This land was acquired by the TPWD just in time. A company was ready to build a subdivision there, which would have totally destroyed Honey Creek. The family that owned the land sold it to the TPWD at a major discount. They are heroes in my eyes.
The views here are beautiful. I love the fall colors. You don't see it so much in the trees. But, the grasses are displaying many different shades of gold.
This is the grave of a young boy who was part of the original settling family. His younger brother was the first person to be buried at the nearby church.
This is just a beetle doing his thing.
This dark black fungus attracted my eye.

This is Gilbert Martinez. He is the boss of the area and lives on the property. He leads these walks every once in a while, so keep your eye on the Guadalupe River SP events page. But, remember that this is Honey Creek RANCH State Natural Area NOT Honey Creek State Natural Area.

This one is a dung beetle.
I loved the way this old van looked. I wish I had taken more time to get a better picture. Next Time.
This little tank looked cool.
This is a male American Kestrel.
There are several natural rock formations.
Some of the land is pretty hilly.
I liked the reflection of the trees in the water.
Gilbert was showing us a tiny cricket frog.

The buildings look like they may have been used as a wedding venue.

This Phoebe put on a little show right at the end of the tour by our vehicles.
